Synopsis

Colbee College - an institution of higher learning in San Francisco - is holding an all-years reunion. Fifty years ago, Alice and Brian were romantically involved during their college years. Today, they are both single (widowed living in Seattle and divorced living in Phoenix, respectively) and somewhat lonely, despite their loving families.

Alice and her friend Maggie chat excitedly on the phone about the reunion, but Maggie has recently taken a fall and unfortunately cannot attend. Alice packs her things, helped by her daughter Jennifer, who can’t understand why somebody of Alice’s advanced years would want to fly to San Francisco and venture to this reunion on her own. Jennifer is concerned that her mother is just too old to travel alone and fears for her safety. Alice is adamant that she’s going to go, saying “Age only matters if you’re cheese, dear.” They continue to pack, but there is some disagreement over how many pairs of shoes Alice should take for just one short weekend trip. Ultimately, the two women sit on the overfilled suitcase to force it to close, and head for the airport.

Brian, a retired banker who lives by a golf course in Phoenix, is utterly fed up with his boring life and expounds to his son Toby that he’s going to the Colbee reunion for something to do. Toby can’t understand what has gotten into his father -- after all, there won’t be any people left of his age that he remembers -- what’s the point of attending? Toby, an avid recreational fisherman, suggests that his father and he try fishing together after Brian returns from San Francisco. They too head for the airport.

At the college reunion, Alice and Brian encounter one another. They spend the long evening engaged in conversation, and realize their old feelings for one another have remained after all these years. They fall in love all over again, and both experience the rejuvenation and euphoria of being in love, despite their advanced years.

Returning home from the reunion, Alice and Brian share their happy news with their respective families. They don’t expect their children to react so negatively. The family members are astonished that these two old people want to marry and spend their remaining days together. Alice and Brian persist with their plans to marry regardless. In their phone duet “Destined” they realize that their love goes beyond friendship and that they want to spend the rest of their lives together.

In the final scene, the families meet at Alice’s home in Seattle after the wedding. She and Brian have decided to live part of their year in Seattle and the other part in Arizona. The family members find a great deal in common and change their mind about their respective additions to the family. The Pastor joins them and the story ends with a great deal of revelry and photo-taking. It just so happens that while Colbee is a college, it’s also a kind of aged cheese (spelled Colby). So, smile and say “Cheese.” Savor the flavor of life at any age!
