Rubato rhythm with great expression.
Flowing piano accompaniment.

LYRICS

PROCESSION
September, filled with grace
Your days are golden and your evenings hazy blue.
October, full of mystery
Crisp cool mornings and tangy dark nights of smoky fires.
November, sedate and stately
Shining harvest moon lights sharp memories of frosty nights
December, rollicking and joyful
Your dancing snapping hours belong
With all the dancing days of Autumn

2. O Autumn

A conversation with the restless Autumn season.
Duet between male and female voices.

O AUTUMN
O, Autumn,
Cease thy slow, sad dirge of days!
You will not stay, but must, forever, go on changing.
O, season, stop your restless, patterned steps!
And still my heart that seeks to go a-ranging.
Stay, I must, while you dance on and leave me
O, Autumn, rest! And cease thy dance unchanging.

3. Wild Geese

A conversation with the restless Autumn season.
Duet between male and female voices.

WILD GEESE
The wild geese welcome Autumn, and spread their wings to fly before its willful winds.
They open wide their wings, and leap up joyfully into Autumn’s wild gales.
Before the giant Harvest moon, we see them streaming by like clouds,
Flocks of smoky black shadows, flowing, silhouetted, against the gilded moon.
They laugh at us. They shake their feathers scornfully.
“Poor wingless things, who’ll never know the boundless freedom of the sky.”
We hear the echo of their voices, as one calls farewell to Autumn.
They dance above Earth’s boundaries,
And fly above the seasons in the wild Autumn wind.
